A sunny day of volunteering community work

Almost exactly 2 years ago, my colleagues and I worked a full week (in shifts...each half a day) to build a new bigger playground at a home for 50 young children that cannot stay and grow up in their families anymore.

The company I work for, had to be a "model company" according to its founder,  with a positive impact on its customers, employees and the communities in which the company operates. There are several foundations that fund social projects and scientific research and other philanthropic things.  Also employees in need can apply in all discretion for help at our employee foundation.

This year our office in Belgium has submitted a project for a non profit organisation that offers therapeutic sessions with horses to children and young adults with psychologic challenges.  Once again it was a combination of materials paid by the foundation and some volunteering labour time offered by our colleagues (but during our paid hours from our employer).  Unlike 2 years ago which was a huge project where every colleague participated, here we could volunteer to participate.   Twice as many people enrolled as anticipated but we all got the approval to take the half a day out of our schedule and go and help.  In teams of 6 we al go during a week half a day.

Today I helped building a new fence around one of the riding fields.   The weather was glorious so there was no better place to be on a Friday afternoon but to be out on the field next to horses, free running chickens, a dozen dogs and a wood nearby with birds of prey circling above our heads.

We got going under the advice of one of our technicians. Thank goodness they were assigned in each team as well to assure we deliver something of quality :p.   I spent the entire afternoon measuring wood, drawing lines, drilling holes and holding beams.  But it was awesome.   I am really greatfull we got the opportunity to do this.
