A night out in Taste

When I realised that Jan and I would spend a long weekend without children, due to their absence on a scouting camp, I immediately thought of going out for dinner in one of Leuven's many gastronomic restaurants.  With the children, we don't really go out to upscale restaurants as it would be sort of a waste of money on them. And truthfully, we somehow never plan babysits for such a sort of date night either.

But I was very excited to be able to book at table at Taste on our first evening alone.  Taste is one of the restaurants in Leuven with a Gault Millau score of 14/20 and is located at 1km from our door.  Unfortunately, during the 15' that we had to walk there, the clouds treated us to an impressive downpour where our umbrellas couldn't prevent our pants and shoes to get soaked.

We were welcomed and started with an interesting cocktail which mixed a traditional Belgian grain gin and a local sour lambic beer with elderly flower. Very tasty, dry and sour.

At Taste, your cutlery is hidden in a secret drawer under your table. Interesting concept.

The entire menu, including all drinks were 100% Belgian.

We started with some amuses : a smoked trout, a "tomate-crevette" and a tiny steak tartare.

Green eel terrine with white beer

Zeeland mussels - herb butter - crispy potato stick

Sole on a bed of celery and rhubarb and sea lavender

Spring-role of rabbit on a chutney of sour plumbs.

Filet pur  Riegel duroc  in a decomposed Liège salad

3 Belgian cheeses each time with a preperation

Just when we want to ask the bill, the chef comes out again but with a cute tiny little ice cream cart, including the typical "Fur Elise" music that comes with such an ice cream cart. Hilarious and very charming to receive a little ice cream before we leave.

All wines were Belgian, but to my surprise in fact all Flemish. I would have assumed to also be served some wines from the Namur area, but that wasn't the case.  Quite some from Antwerp which isn't a wine region in my mind.

It was a very pleasant evening and it felt good to get spoiled again and spend a full evening with just the two of us without home distractions.  I think I'll check already the restaurants agenda's for next Summer.
