The boys had to clean up their chill basement corner and their attick corner
Recently I saw on my FB memories the pictures of our basement renovations in 2021: our office space got professionalised with a lot of build-in cupboards and next to us the children had a sofa, cupboards for toys and a tv. I assumed they'd love their chill space and hang out there frequently, rather than sitting with us in the living room.
But that didn't happen so much. And they had requested a table to build a lego city where a lot of their LEGO sets were placed but very quickly that space wasn't sufficient. LEGO boats, trucks and other things were living on the sofa and the floor and slowly but steadily the children's corner in the basement became a dump of boxes and sets on each possible moment up to he point we really couldn't enter it anymore this winter. For months we had told them to clean up but now we were just too fed up. They had to clean up. It took a lot of whining, stress but in the end they (mainly Kabouter) succeeded in sorting, reboxing, reusing the cupboards and freeing up the sofa and floor again. Wow!
I vaccuumed worth a dozen Rodin's hair from the sofa and the chill space was back. Kabouter had borrowed a FIFA nintendo game from the library and all of a sudden the boys don't require ipad screentime anymore: they disappear to the basement where a lot of cheering and giggling takes place during big soccer tournaments. Ha, that's what I had intended in 2021. Nice.

A similar story happened on the attick in the east of Belgium where the boys have their bedroom but also space to play. It never becomes so inaccessible as the Leuven basement but toys and camps with blankets etc tend to take over. I don't ask them to clean-up each time: the advantage there is that we simply leave when we want and come there to relax, not to clean all the time. But Beertje will have a sleep-over with friends in the future, so he had to make space for matrasses on the floor for his friends. Aaaah it's so lovely to see space and structure! I wonder for how long it'll last.
