Carmen by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen

After our trip to Nabucco in March, my friend from yab.be invited me again for an opera. This time it was Carmen by Bizet.  Ha!
I only hesitated since it was the afternoon after the wedding we attended so I'd be a bit drop dead tired.  But it's Carmen! Such a classic. If there is any opera by which I know a bit of music, which I played on 2 cassette tapes in my teenage years, it is Carmen.   I've even dubbed some new lyrics to Habanera in English class when we had to present a chapter of Animal Farm (Orwell) in an original way.

Anyway, I couldn't miss the opportunity to see Carmen so we hopped on the train again on Sunday afternoon to Antwerp where we met some of yab's colleagues that also attended the performance.

The performance was visually less surprising than Nabucco. While the latter surprised with a very modern styling, pop-up choirs seated among the visitors, turning mirrors and performers filming themselves, .... had Carmen a more traditional visual styling that purely happened on stage in costumes.

But there were dancers, choirs, ...lots of performers, lots of things happening. And the music! Gosh I knew so much more of the music than I anticipated.  Oh yeah the children's choir, the gypsy song, aaah! So much good music.  And this time had prepared myself by looking up the story beforehand, which helped.

I'm glad that I went even with a lack of sleep!
