A local Champions League soccer game
Wednesday noon Sept 23rd, Kabouter comes home from school and yells in the hallway "I have free tickets for the Champions League tonight".
Huh? What? Surely he had been scammed.
The details were even more strange. There was a giant squirrel in the city park and he had waved and the squirrel mascotte had asked if he wanted tickets and had just given him some. Turns out it are voucher codes to be used in the OHL ticket site when checking out tickets for the women's game that evening. Sure enough OHL women are quite successful and have started playing in the UEFA Women's Champion's League.
Hmm maybe it wasn't such a scam after all. It referred to the normal OHL ticket site and ticket process. The tickets for the women's games were also shockingly cheap so it wasn't as if we had won the big lottery price either. I phoned to an acquaintance active in the OHL fan league and he knew there were marketing campaigns to give 1000 people in Leuven free tickets.
Well ok so Kabouter had just had a birthday, he starts to love soccer more and more so why not. I went to buy tickets for our entire family and with the vouchers could set the total value to pay back to zero and ... that evening we skipped judo practise and walked to the soccer stadium instead. Ha the fun of just walking 10 minutes by foot to an official Champion's League game!

While Jan was still waiting at home for our grocery delivery, we already entered the stadium, we greeting the squirrel mascotte again and took our seats without issue. So much room still in the stadium, no wonder that they gave away free tickets. What a shame.
The team of AS Roma doing their warm-up right in front of our nose
Plenty of empty seats still.
The official opening ceremony

In the game seemed the Italians stronger in the first half but without realising any true danger and this turned a bit in the 2nd half. Right at the end the VAR had somehow seen hands in an earlier phase and Roma got a penalty that we stopped. Yeaaaaay.
OHL was very happy and proud of the end result.
We enjoyed our game but I thought the game was often "far" away to see without commentators. But it was cool to attend for sure! Fun surprise by the squirrel. So if you ever meet a giant squirrel handing out free tickets for a Champion's League game: it might not be a scam.
