Walking between Zeebrugge and Blankenberge with a friend

On Saturday another friend joined us at the Belgian coast.  The weather was really nice so the boys wanted to profit for a last good beach day but we went for a walk.

We headed out via the beach towards Blankenberge where we missed our stop at first so we walked most of the dike boulevard. Via the over crowded Kerkstraat (gosh, how do I hate these crowds at the Belgian coast!), we returned and at the edge of Blankenberge we followed the path in the dunes.

busy Blankenberge

Some nice art for 75 years of Suske & Wiske strips.

Much to my surprise, the dunes halfway Blankenberge and Zeebrugge give way for a stretch of water ponds behind the dunes with a small nature reserve "de 3 fonteintjes".  The walking trails cross nearby the coastal road but in well hidden shady bushes and tall grasses.  I was glad I was wearing my long pants to protect my legs as we had to make our way at some points through the grass.  Funny how such a "remote" trail can be at a stones throw of the beach and coastal road and yet hidden from the eye if you don't pay attention.

We rejoined Jan & the boys in the afternoon and chilled a bit at the beach after which we went for a drink at the only beach bar in Zeebrugge to conclude a lovely day.
