Walking the ramparts of Ypres
Before we headed to our vacation spot in De Panne, we first stayed in and visited Ypres. It's a location I had promised Beertje already years ago when he once saw the Last Post on tv and wanted to attend. In the mean time he had forgotten about it, but I really loved Jan's suggestion to have a stop-over in Ypres before we headed to the coast. (It would also give us more flexible driving times that hopefully would avoid the tourist - traffic jams to the coast).
I've been to Ypres before but mostly stayed in the zone of the big Market with the Lakenhalle, cathedral and the Menin Gate. Jan took us on a walk along the ramparts, and I had not fully realized the size and the extension of the ramparts and that they were planned by Vauban. I wasn't aware of many Vauban fortifications in Belgium and definately not so well preserved.
