Visiting the Hop Museum and Talbot House at Poperinge
When leaving our vacation in De Panne we didn't head straight home. In fact, we combine our beach vacation with a traditional family BBQ in the west of Belgium. So we combined with another night in Ypres.
We extensively visited the west corner of Flanders extensively previous year. This year we drove via Poperinge. The heat wave was striking without mercy. Honestly, I felt uneasy to walk outside. I had thought that over the summer we started getting used to heat days and temperatures well above 30C but not this day.
So we had to seek shade in musea.
First we headed to the Hop Museum. I really liked the old building of the old oast building. We took a tour with audio guide which was very extensive and a bit too much to listen to it all. There was little or no info texts on the wall, so you had to use the audio guide.
The disappointing thing was that for the boys they had proposed a treasury hunt with a little booklet but the only thing the boys had to look for where numbers hanging up on the walls. It had nothing to do with hop so they did not pick up anything from the museum. What a missed opportunity.

The ground floor features all (?) Belgian beers grouped per province...an impressive collection!
A few streets further we visited the Talbot House. It was a house for the English army safely behind the war fighting lines in the first World War, where the army's chaplain had founded a safe house where soldiers of any rank were welcome to rest and find some recreation. A safe haven to forget for a few days the crual war further.
We visited the lovely garden, the bathing house, the rooms in the house (that can be booked as a hotel night!) etc and the attic chapel. I could totally feel the importance and point of peace this place has brought. Very interesting.
