I'm not a hipster : I don't listen to podcasts
I've seen it mentioned in so many bucket lists for the new years or in lists of blessings: podcasts.
I must be the unicorn in the world that does not love podcasts as everyone seems to listen to them while commuting to work or running or ...
All my live I've loved to work with music but I tend to switch channels when there is too much talking. As an introvert, I also have to push myself to keep listening and actively engage in social conversations especially with people I don't know very much. When I know it is my role to actively listen (coaching sessions or attending a reception on my own and trying to mingle etc), I can do so. But I'm not sponteneously the best listener, I must admit.
So anyhow, I love to listen to the radio to discover new music (or hear well-known music). But channels with too much talking (Joe in the morning...what a chitchat chaos, MNM and the serious well-informed Radio 1, ... are hardly ever selected). I love to make long playlists that I put on in the car or while working. Obviously there is no talking there.
Jan on the contrary switches the car radio most of the time to Radio 1. On Saturday morning there can be interesting programs like "Interne Keuken" which I kinda enjoy while driving. Interesting conversations with a guest where I can learn something.
So I tried to listen to a podcast once while painting some walls (2 years ago?). I've lasted for 20 minutes. I drove me nuts. If you want to truly listen to a podcast, I realised you need to pay attention so it's not the same as having music in the background. I got nervous by the accents of the people. I read their blogs regularly and they are good copywriters. But tranferring from written text to a spoken texts adds a voice and accent into the mix. If that's not a good mix, it's stealing all attention and it becomes irritating. I guess Radio 1 speakers have been selected on their voice , lack of dialect etc but since anyone can make a podcast, there quality can be anything.
I also got irritated because the tested podcast was made by 2 persons and similarly as I hate radio programs with 2 DJ's, I felt myself excluded. It felt mostly as listening in to a fun conversation between 2 people , rather than them talking to me and focussing on me (like a sole radio DJ would do).
Anyway, after my 20 minute test, I switched back to my music playlist and that was honestly such a relief. I felt liberated , continued painting all day while dancing and felt very motivated to work.
"Been there, done that", was my thought on podcasts. Not for me. I'm sure there's 100000 different types of podcasts and different levels of quality etc etc. I'm sure I probably could find one that captivates my attention well enough rather than irritate me. But I honestly don't want to invest time in searching and testing. And I already lack time to simply listen to music...so my free moments will be dedicated to music and no talking.
