The limestone cliffs near Ault

Cap Griz Nez, Cap Blanc, Dover, Entretat, Pointe du Hoc, The seven sisters,... The English and Northern French coast on each side of the Channel are lined with famous pitoresque chalk cliffs.   We didn't need to go far to go and admire some just south of the Somme Bay.

On a rainy day we ventured out to the next village of Cayeux - sur - Mer, only 13 kms further to make a small walk in the rain along the cliff beach.  We could clearly notice the layers with vulcanic rocks that result in the pebbles along the coast.  With our fingers we could also show that a wet finger simply softened one of the white rock blocks on the beach, to show how sea erosion continues to slowly eat the rocks away.

You can see the beach line with rock remainders of what used to be once a cliff side further into the water. Now it is a sanctuary for nesting water birds and shell fish etc. Very magnificent to see and probably more breathtaking on a sunny day.
