Fireworks on the beach
It was last summer when we realised that our children had never seen proper fireworks. Inland fireworks have become rare with many cities making it illegal to fire off yourself but also not organising it anymore for mayor events out of budgettary reasons and animal safety.
Last year we watched from very far the firework festival in Duinbergen to avoid the crowds and to ensure we still made it on the last coastal trams to our hotel in Zeebrugge. I felt a bit guilty that the boys had not seen it from closer but they had truly enjoyed it.
I was very enthousiastic to find out that De Panne had planned some fireworks during our stay at the coast. They had scheduled it a full 500m from our apartment! Wow, this time no stress to get on the coastal tram at all. Maybe we could just watch from our balcony?
Nah, we walked up close and waited for a long time to the beach where hardly any crowd gathered. For a while I was worried that it had been cancelled. We could also not see any set-up.
Then half an hour before the scheduled time, a truck from a local restaurant drove up on the beach to unload multiple boxes and someone started to set-up a bit with a little rope. Closer to the right time, the fire department also came with stand-by trucks and defining the perimeter. Good, phew, it was going to happen although in much smaller scale than the well-known festival at the west coast. Fair enough, could that we walked up close because they didn't shoot too high. Now we could literally see everything from just 100 m distance. Pretty cool (and loud and flashy in your eyes) though.
