Kid's summer camps
So summer started and that means I've filled the weeks with summer camps for the kids. I used to claim that our rhythm doesn't change in summer but that's not entirely true. Most camps are closeby and don't start before 9AM, so our mornings are a bit slower with some extra time (especially since I don't have any early meetings or commute to take into account yet). But our alarm still rings at the same time and we still make our lunch box for the noon.
The first couple of days of July I didn't arrange anything for Kabouter yet. He's old enough now to enjoy some "just hanging around" and the opportunity to meet up with friends. However I did not take into account that he had already spent over a week at home after the exams so maybe he would have liked an activity. But there's not much offer for half weeks for teenagers.
Beertje on the ohter hand went to a 3-day "cooking/English language camp" with a classmate. It happened to be in Kabouter's high school so Kabouter took the honour to bring him and show him around the first morning.
In the 2nd week both boys tested a new sport. Beertje explored handball just around the corner from our house and Kabouter had chosen fencing sport much to my surprise. Both seemed to enjoy it a lot. Since both were closeby, we went to have a peak at their sports in both sport halls.
Previous week they both went to the playground activities organized by the city of Leuven. They walked the full 300m themselves. For Kabouter it was the first time he went to the "teenager" group and he adored it. They clearly adapt the activities to the age with more autonomy for the elder (and city games, and cooking including going to the supermarket to shop beforehand etc...)
And we got ready to pack for their scouting camps...
Jan got to drive Kabouter on Saturday morning to a field near the French border... and now we won't hear from him in the next 10 days. But he had such a blast last year that I'm very excited for him.
And so we are now empty nested for 8 days until Beertje returns, after which Kabouter will return next week. Ugh the house is so quiet.
Maybe I turn off that morning alarm clock this week and see if I sleep in a bit.

Monday morning it was Beertje's moment to leave. He's staying in Spa in the east of Belgium in an area we are familiar with.
