Visiting Death in Paradise filming locations in Guadaloupe (2/2)

If you are searching for Death in Paradise filming locations,  the town of Deshaies in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe is your prime location.  As you can read and see in the previous post, it is the location of the police station, the harbour, Catherine's bar,...

But we went to look for more filming locations on the island with success.

The Beach with the detectives hut - Anse de la Perle

The next important location is the living place of all the detectives: a wooden house/hut on a gorgeous beach with view on an island.

The beach is Anse de la Perle, but the hut is only there during the filming months and gets deconstructed afterwards.  Anse de la Perle is not such a deserted beach as it seems on tv: there is a few bar/restaurant shacks on the beach such as "Ti Poisson La" which served me the best food I had in Guadeloupe (in rum marinated sweet water schrimps on the BBQ) but which has the funny address on google maps "3rd restaurant from the left".  Haha.  In the back of the beach under the palm trees are also showers and a little toilet hut and a bit further some red gazebo's that offer some extra shade or some protection during a tropical rain shower.

Anse de la Perle

With help of some googled pictures, I carefully analyzed the beach and I must say that I am 95% certain that I found the exact location of the dectives hut.  It is located here at 16.340233022509302, -61.77937566065447 degrees.

  • The construction is built around one of the existing gazebo's according to a pinterest picture
  • There are 2 decidious trees , one on each side of the hut...well, there aren't that many on the beach.
  • There is a very clear shrub going forward onto the beach that is shielding the right side of the beach view from the terrace.
  • There is an access road right until the backside of this point, which makes sense to manage the logistics of all this filming on location

Access road via wasteland parking next to the highland

Here on this spot!!

The Government house with the commissioner's office - The Mairie in Pointe-Noire

In the town Pointe Noire the city hall is used as Government House.  You can find it here 66M5+2WM, Pointe-Noire 97116, Guadeloupe, 16.23260034966304, -61.79018064172722

compare...haha I think they do a pretty sad job with the simple sign "government house" though.

ha on the right picture you can see the pole with the French Marianne in the image on the left of the building. Funny. But then Sainte-Marie was once a French colony.

Check the door when filmed in the hallway inside!

Murder location : murder on DI Richard Poole with the ice pick.

The opening episode of season 3 has its main inspector killed...which is the introduction of Humphrey Goodman who has to fly in to investigate the murder on his predecessor.   (villers Deshaies, 97126, Guadeloupe. 16.300094667308112, -61.7992222995681)

This took place in the villa that is just under the Botanical Garden in Deshaies, which is worth visiting. This villa can be rented as a vacation location, by the way...just don't go with former Cambridge study friends that have secrets.

Murder location: the volcany observatory :
Erupting murder:

In the first episode of season 6, a scientist has been found dead on a live volcano.  Turns out the group of scientists working in the observatory are full of intrigues.
We found the observatory near Basse-Terre at Route de l'observatoire 15.980765436247482, -61.703563774314354.

Murder location: the Zoo

In the Zoo a zookeeper is murdered with a tranqualiser in season 8, episode 2.  The location of this filming is not hard to find, as it was all filmed in the Guadeloupe Zoo.

Murder location: the bride falls from the balcony after being shot with a spear gun.
We've looked into staying at the Langley Resort Fort Royal but the rooms were a bit above the budget we wanted to spend.  It's a good location for a wedding party however...just don't come with a butler that holds a grudge against you.

Somewhere I read on the internet that a 2nd murder, a drowning in a hotel pool would be shot here too, but I don't know which episode.

You can find the hotel at Imp. Petit Bas Vent, Deshaies 97126, Guadeloupe 16.34910146006981, -61.77554209842061.  We explored the beach Anse Du Grand Basse Vent there which has a good view on the hotel and vice versa.

Airport from the begin tune:

We drove by and I didn't take a picture, but pretty sure that the filming on the small Sainte-Marie airport would be on the local aiport at the Aerodrome of Basse-Terre Bailiff (345, Baillif 97123, Guadeloupe,  16.012431284206748, -61.74255053661405)

Patrice's bar

Florence was engaged to Patrice in season 8 but he got killed.  Before that we see however that he is running a bar. It's only after our return we saw that again and we are pretty certain that this bar is Le Calebassier near the fisher harbout in Pointe-Noire.  (Port de peche, Pointe-Noire 97110, Guadeloupe 16.26075717217037, -61.805701952404405).

Too bad we didn't deduct that while on the island as it looks like a nice spot to go and have a cocktail drink.

The Sainte-Marie ferry

In the last episode of season 13 (which we watched in Guadeloupe by the way), we see the detective Neville and Florence leave the island together on the ferry.   But also on other epis

And guess on which both my men went whale watching that morning??  This whale watching tour is offered in Bouillante just south of Plage de Malendure.

Fields with sugar cane and banana plants in a more flat landscape?

Deshaies, Pointe-Noire, Basse -Terre are all towns on the steep slopes of the old volcanoes of Basse-Terre island.  The slopes are steep, so there are not really flat fields . Those are on the other side of the island.
But north of Deshaies near Sainte Rose the landscape already starts changing.
And there are some windmills there that we think we can spot now.  It's only 10-15 minutes further of other frequent filming locations, so it makes sense that filming would also take place here.

Guess what's on tv in Guadeloupe?!

No, no I'm kidding, we were streaming the last episode while on vacation there as we had not been able to watch it yet before our departure. The cool thing is that our resort owners had been extra's on the market at the end of the episode near the harbour in Deshaies.  But we couldn't recognize them.

But how meta was it to watch a show that was shot just a few km away...with people that are just having dinner in their house a few meters away.  :D. Awesome!
