The books I read this winter (part 2)

Laura Lippman - Als ik aan je denk

Lu Brant is a new prosecutor, taking a job her father has done in her past.   Her first case brings back memories from one of his cases but also her brother's youth.  The stories alternate, and you can feel there is a link but of course which one is only clear at the end of the book.

It's about society ideas, single parents, adolescents, family secrets, ... It's not as much a thriller as I would have liked but it was nice that it wasn't a traditional who dunnit.

Jessica JJ Lutz - De Nederlandse bruid

Emma marries her Turkisch friend, who takes over the leadership of his clan when his father, the clan leader passes away in east Turkey.  She arrives in a totally new world with an attitude full of naivity and idealism.

Their new ideas don't always land well in a world full of traditions, political power struggle and secrets.  She tries to connect to her new world but that's not always welcomed.
She's naief but at the same time also brave since I'd given up right away.

Nora Roberts - Het strandhuis

A former lawyer tries to build up his life again after he got wrongfully prosecuted for the murder on his wife. He lives in his grandmother's beach house while she recovers from a bad fall.

Quite predictably he falls in love with the entrepreneurial positive house keeper but their new love is threatened for someone that is still out for revenge.

Quite a nice easy page turner.

Ben Lerner - Leerjaren in Topeka

The book switches from perspective between 2 psychotherapists and their children in unchronological order between past and present.
There is a lot of words, about relationships and their meaning and aspirations ...too much words without story line.  I didn't get it at all. I really contemplated stop reading it halfway. But I gave it another try, hoping that a plot would appear quickly.

Well it didn't.  What a waste of time.

Jane Fallon - Tussen Twee Zussen

This is the 3rd book in a year that I read by Jane Fallon so I knew what to expect. She's brilliant to describe relationships in a world where often people pretend for a nice facade,  take advantage of an innocent naieve friend but when that one comes to realise it, there is sweet hilarious revenge.

This time the facades were there, the betrayal, the relationships but it was in the end deeper as it didn't go for the easy revenge. In the end, when you look behind all the fake facades, the reality was rather sad.

Still enjoyed this book a lot and finished it just in a few days. What a relief after the previous drag.
