Artis in Amsterdam

It's an understatement that we had picked a few days of citytripping in Amsterdam during aweful weather but I had carefully checked the weather forecasts and I hoped for an hour or two of rain relief on Wednesday afternoon.

So after our cultural quest in the Rijksmuseum, we took the tram towards Artis, because a zoo with the children is always success.  And tip: if you have a subscription to the Belgian Zoo/Plankendael you can simply enter for free in Artis.  Woohoo.

The aquarium building was closed for renovation to my disappointment but other than that Artis always surprises me in the sense that it looks small at first sight and in the end it is always bigger than I first thought.

Anyway, we did not stay rainfree and it was chilly but we spent a nice 2 hours exploring the animals in the city centre of Amsterdam.

This sea lion kept biting his tail and swirling in circles.  Strange

We noticed that the gorilla's were in their inside cages while the caregivers were hiding food everywhere in their room, so we waited a bit for the release moment. It was funny to observe the animals rage towards the carrots that were clearly more a favourite than the lettuce. They all scrabbled as many carrots as they could and then dragged it to a corner for their own to nibble on it quietly once all carrots had been divided.

how many carrots can a gorilla carry away at once?
